Our Brief
MA Ventures have been contracted to provide expert drainage and groundwork services to Scottish Water, the organisation that looks after Scotland’s most precious natural resource. Our task: to improve the river embankment and replace the outfall pipe at Milton’s Waste Water Treatment Works to improve site safety and ensure it complied with all regulations.
What Are Outfalls?
Outfalls are the locations where a Scottish Water facility overflows or discharges into the sea, a river or a lake. Outfalls, if left unregulated, can increase erosion to embankments and riverbeds, alongside sediment build up downstream. This, in turn, can damage the ecological environments within these waters and lead to further adjustments to the environment in the future.
In this instance, the existing outfall pipe was not effective and was causing the river bank to scour (erode) out.
Our Action Plan
Our experienced team removed sections of the pipe that had been left behind after an earlier attempt to repair the outfall by a different team of engineers.
After removing the pipes, we ensured each section was disinfected and disposed of responsibly at a local recycling facility. This is just one example of how our business addresses sustainable, safe practices within our working procedures.
A new outfall pipe and concrete headwall was constructed and supplied by the team at Innes Pipes, situated in the Scottish Highlands. These were then installed on the river bank in accordance with current SEPA regulations.
Following the amendment and positioning of the outfall pipe, formwork was constructed and a concrete surround was placed over the new pipe. To complete the reconstruction project, the river bank was refurbished and reinforced with 100% natural coir matting supplied by Inverness-based firm, Keyline.
Following Good Practice in Our Environment
Silt curtains and oil booms were in place throughout the duration of our works to make certain that the river was kept clean. We also ensured that the greatest level of care was taken, in order to avoid impacting the local environment, including fish living in the river. As part of this care, we did not undertake any work during the spawning season.
